This year is our first full year in Colorado. One of my goals is to get myself back into shape. I used to be able to run a marathon…. well….. not anymore.

I am still cold from my lunchtime swim today. I don’t normally swim at the Lakeland Family YMCA, so how was I to know the pool heater has been busted for a few weeks now. I dove in and did my warm-up laps and began to look for the iceberg that sunk the Titanic. I am surprised the ship wasn’t in the frosty waters either.

I rarely cut my workouts short, but that was ridiculous. I think it rivaled the pool temps of the Idlewood Swim Club when David Molnar and I were kids swimming in the AAU kids teams. BRrrrrrrrrr……

Then…. to top matters off, I go into the locker room thinking a hot shower would be nice. Well, they have 3 shower stalls, 2 work, one sort of pisses water out. Some ancient dude was signing songs from the 50’s while hogging the good one. Then, as I went to get into the other working one some guy dives into it who appears to be afraid to change into his board shorts around other guys. Ok, so I get stuck with the non-working shower. And I am STILL cold.

OK, you can all laugh now.

Two years ago @[1294803598:2048:Jesse Pannell] had run his first marathon. For the last year and a half he has concentrated on half marathons in the Rock and Roll series. Unfortunately he injured his knee, may need surgery, so he is probably not going to compete this year. Sort of sucks.

Always! The people are great, I do not currently work out with a club, but my local Y is considering it…. so maybe…. just maybe…… we will soon have a team. US Masters has a great support structure.

Almost going to give up on my Saturday morning swim workouts. The Y was a zoo again this morning. 2 lanes were swim lessons and I have to say the guy that teaches that group is amazing with the kids. He even makes butterfly (the stroke from hell) look fun.

Then we have 4 lanes of lap swim….. Right…… You would think the average adult would know that “lap swim” means you swim to the far wall, turn around, swim back, and repeat. Nope. 10 people sharing 4 lanes. OK, that works if everyone will f’ing swim laps. Out of 10 people 3 of us wanted to actually get a work out in. For the other 7 it means swim (barely) to the far wall, grab onto it, catch ones breath for at least 5 minutes, slowly swim back, catch breath, wait 4-5 minutes and repeat. Oh, the hanging on the wall, we can’t do that off to the sides of the lane, we have to do it right in the middle.

The three of us swimming laps actually asked the others if we could share a lane off to one side and if they could share the other 4 lanes. Nope, they wanted to stay where they were at.

I don’t always do flip turns, but, today, I think we had all had enough. At least 5 out of the 7 wall hangers got kicked and pretty seriously splashed. And I do not apologize. I think the lifeguard may have gotten soaked a few times as well. I saw her sputtering a little. Ooops. Perhaps the wall hangers need to use some common sense and get out of the way.

The guy teaching the swim lessons saw what was happening and was laughing his ass off. As I was leaving he told me that he couldn’t believe that they didn’t have the common sense to let us share a lane.
