All things fitness related.
My lunchtime swim today. The “rest” is because the lifeguard/swim coach was bored and wanted to shoot the shit for 15 minutes. I like when I see improvement.

Unfortunately I had to cancel my weekend plans. Was supposed to go do Swim South Florida’s first race of the season, Swim Ft. Lauderdale, on Sunday morning. After the possibility of yet another blood clot, I decided that I just wasn’t feeling safe about it. My Doctor said that I could do it but over the years have learned to trust my instincts. Going to skip this one. I will have to go see what’s next.
Realized a few things while watching the marathon today. Which was sort of strange after running it last year.
1) I am not a good spectator. I wanted to reach out and slap everyone that stopped for a picture in front of the castle. Wanted to yell at them “move it! You will be sorry you stopped later in the race!!”
2) It was still cold watching it.
3) A lot of people are stupid when running races. They are looking for injuries.
4) No, it’s not a good idea to stop while coming through the boardwalk and EPCOT to pick up a margarita to cross the finish line with.
5) No the rodent at the finish line does not want a drink, but the race announcer will gladly help you part with the drink.
6) The Disney Marathon is something to do once.
7) People have no etiquette anymore.
We are finally home. Jesse had a good race, took care of one item from the bucket list without kicking said bucket. Now it’s time for some rest and recovery. He has a busy half marathon schedule for the next year.
Thank you for all the support!
His time appears to have been 6:06:40 which was better than any of his training runs.
Itโs 2:45am and Jesse just left hotel room to catch bus to start at Epcot. I will follow in a little bit so that I can get up to the Magic Kingdom to see him come through the castle. Official start time is 5:30am
My Garmin is starting to have issues. Considering if it’s time to replace and upgrade. Things a fitness tracker has to have for me:
1. Heart rate monitoring during rest and workouts (I am trying to find one that actually monitors while swimming)
2. Multi-sport
3. Must be able to sync to trainingpeaks.com
4. Must not be so big that it interferes or “catches” on the water while swimming – I am slow enough, don’t need help.
5. Decent battery life
6. MUST have GPS capability during open water swimming
Anyone?
The last time I swam a competitive event was in May of 1985 in New York State while I was in college. Since then I have swum for fun and exercise, but have stayed away from anything competitive. First, having grown up in the pool swimming competitively I find that I get bored really easily. Second, while swimming was good to me in high school, I do not have a ton of fond memories from my years on teams. Third, most coaches attitudes are enough to drive someone insane.
So, at 52 years old I finally decided that I was going to take advantage ofย a new challenge. Open Water swimming events. I did one or two of these when I was younger and looking back I had fun. So, on August 13, 2017 I am registered to do the Swim Miami Beach 5K.

I believe I am in good enough shape and physical condition to complete this event. I have been swimming 6 times a week, usually doing between 3.5K and 5.2K a day. The one thing I am missing is open water swims because lakes in Florida are really not a place you want to swim and it is a little over an hour for me to drive to the East Coast.
Before work ride today. Having issue with chain on bike. I guess you get what you pay for. And met a few not so nice dogs near the end.

Switched up my planned workout today. Started off with a 14 mile bike ride (first one in months) and then followed it up with a 6 mile run. I must have looked DRUNK for the 1st quarter mile of the run. Yes, this is beginning training for my next challenge, a short triathlon in March.
