As of April 4, 2026, the National Preparedness Level is at 2. While
overall national fire activity is currently considered light, there is
significant concentrated activity in the Southern Area, which is at
Preparedness Level 3.

Nationwide, there are approximately 15 uncontained large fires burning,
with over 1,200 personnel currently deployed.

Significant Regional Activity
1. California (New Major Incidents)
Southern California is seeing an unseasonably early start to major fire
activity due to a spring heatwave and strong winds.

Springs Fire (Riverside County): This is currently the most active
incident, burning over 4,176 acres north and east of Lake Perris.
Containment is reported at 10%. Evacuation orders have been issued for
areas near Moreno Valley.

Crown Fire (Los Angeles County): A smaller blaze near Castaic, currently
at 345 acres with 25% containment.

2. The South (Highest Volume of Activity)
North Carolina: Two major fires near Saluda—the Deep Woods Fire (3,969
acres, 79% contained) and the Black Cove Fire (3,502 acres, 97%
contained)—are reaching high containment levels. However, the
Rattlesnake Branch Fire near Waynesville is at 1,843 acres and only 26%
contained.

Florida: The East Marsh Fire in the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife
Refuge is at 3,377 acres and 80% containment. Several smaller fires,
including the Sargent Fire, are exhibiting active behavior with torching
and spotting.

Oklahoma & Texas: In Oklahoma, the Thompson and Box fires have shown
extreme behavior, including crowning and long-range spotting. In Texas,
the Lefty Fire (east of Turkey, TX) is threatening local residences.

3. Rocky Mountain Area
South Dakota: The Timber Fire near Wounded Knee is burning through 450
acres of timber and grass. It is currently 90% contained, with crews
focused on protecting nearby structures.

Seasonal Outlook
The National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) warns that due to a
significant "snow drought" and record-breaking March temperatures, much
of the Western U.S. is facing an above-normal wildfire risk much earlier
than in previous years.
