Hi everyone,

I want to introduce a powerful new experimental capability now running
locally on my Hub station using BPQ: the TPRFN Node (MELNOD:N3MEL-7).

This system integrates an advanced processing model directly into our
local packet radio infrastructure. This is significant because it
bridges not only the AXIP node stack but also RF, allowing radio
operators to query it via a standard packet radio connection without
needing local internet access.

Why: This Matters for EMCOMM and Grid-Down Scenarios

When the power grid fails and traditional internet, cellular networks,
and commercial communications go dark, situational awareness becomes our
most critical challenge. This gateway provides a leap forward for
emergency communications (EMCOMM):

- RF-Only Infrastructure Dependency: The gateway is built to serve as
an intelligent node on our RF- backbone. It allows any station with
basic packet capability to access complex data processing entirely over
the airwaves.
- On-Demand Technical Assistance: If an operator is deployed in the
field and needs to calculate antenna lengths, troubleshoot an
electronics/battery issue, or configure software under stress, the
system provides instant, direct technical answers.
- Localized Context and Situational Awareness: The system is
pre-configured with real-time awareness of a specific location by (zip
code, or grid square). As of June 11, 2026, it can immediately
synthesize space weather, propagation data, and local weather conditions
by zip code into dense, packet-friendly reports.
- Bandwidth Discipline: To protect precious RF channel capacity, the
gateway enforces strict formatting rules. It automatically strips out
markdown, bolding, and headers, returning answers in clean, plain ASCII
limited to a maximum of 60 words.
- A Starlink failover will soon be available should my local internet
go down here in SEPA.

Built-in Node Tools

Beyond digital traffic processing, the gateway includes instant local
macros and automated utility tools to save time on the air:

- From the node prompt you have several options starting with ? for
the full list:
1. Type WX you will be asked for the zip code of the area
for which you want a weather forecast.
2. Type FORC you will be asked for the zip code of the
area for which you want a 24 hr weather conditions.
3. Type AI follow the prompts.
- KEYWORDS: Instantly lists approved emergency and radio
topics to keep traffic focused
- Automated Call Sign Lookups: Simply typing a station
call sign triggers a rapid, condensed database search to verify operator
names, license classes, and grid squares over packet.
- Local Information Macros: Rapidly serves pre-configured
resources for TPRFN routing, Skywarn reporting links, and digital
radiogram forms.
This gateway represents a major step in making our volunteer
communication network more resilient, intelligent, and self-sufficient
when standard infrastructure completely drops off the map.
