The last time I swam a competitive event was in May of 1985 in New York State while I was in college. Since then I have swum for fun and exercise, but have stayed away from anything competitive. First, having grown up in the pool swimming competitively I find that I get bored really easily. Second, while swimming was good to me in high school, I do not have a ton of fond memories from my years on teams. Third, most coaches attitudes are enough to drive someone insane.
So, at 52 years old I finally decided that I was going to take advantage of a new challenge. Open Water swimming events. I did one or two of these when I was younger and looking back I had fun. So, on August 13, 2017 I am registered to do the Swim Miami Beach 5K.

I believe I am in good enough shape and physical condition to complete this event. I have been swimming 6 times a week, usually doing between 3.5K and 5.2K a day. The one thing I am missing is open water swims because lakes in Florida are really not a place you want to swim and it is a little over an hour for me to drive to the East Coast.
