Short Range Forecast Discussion
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
103 AM EDT Sun May 31 2026
Valid 12Z Sun May 31 2026 - 12Z Tue Jun 02 2026
..Showers and thunderstorms continue across Northern Rockies into
the Southeast through Monday...
..Slight Risk for excessive rainfall and flash flooding over
parts of the Southeast on Sunday...
..Moderate to isolated Major Heat Risk over parts of the southern
Plains...
Unsettled weather continues as a frontal passage stretches from
Northern Rockies downward into the Plains and across the
Southeast. This will bring multiple rounds of showers and
thunderstorms along the boundary. With the combination
instability, shortwave disturbances, and a increase in warm
moisture, the system may bring moments of heavy rainfall across
the Southeast on Sunday, which will bring flooding concerns over
soils that remain saturated. Therefore, Weather Prediction Center
(WPC) has highlight a Slight Risk (level 2/4) of excessive
rainfall over portions of the Southeast. Elsewhere along the
boundary, there is a Marginal Risk (level 1/4) of excessive
rainfall stretching from the Northern Rockies into the Plains, as
the system is expected to bring intense rainfall rates that can
produce flash flooding on Sunday. Storm Prediction Center (SPC)
has also issued a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) of severe
thunderstorms across the Dakotas into the Ozarks and parts of
western Texas.
On Monday, the quasi-stationary frontal system slightly moves
northeastward with a upper low sitting over northwestern U.S.,
which will continue to bring showers and thunderstorms over parts
of eastern U.S. With multiple shortwave disturbances and
sufficient instability, SPC has highlighted a Slight Risk (level
2/5) of severe thunderstorms from eastern Colorado into Kansas
with a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) across parts of central U.S. and
the Southeast. Additional hazards associated with this storm will
be large hail and severe wind gusts.
Over the next few days, much of CONUS will see closer to average
to above normal temperatures, while the northern Rockies will
still see below normal temperatures. Over the southern Plains,
temperatures will climb to the 90s, which will bring moderate to
major Heat Risk concerns.
