Short Range Forecast Discussion
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
338 AM EDT Sun May 10 2026
Valid 12Z Sun May 10 2026 - 12Z Tue May 12 2026
A front extending from the Northeast to the Southern Plains will
move southward to the Gulf Coast and eastward to off the Northeast
Coast by Sunday evening. The boundary will produce scattered rain
showers in the morning over the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic and
showers /thunderstorms in the afternoon into the evening from the
Mid-Atlantic to the Southern Plains/Gulf Coast.
In addition, showers and severe thunderstorms will develop over
parts of the Southern Plains on Sunday. Therefore, the SPC has
issued an Enhanced Risk (level 3/5) of severe thunderstorms over
parts of the Southern Plains on Sunday. The hazards associated
with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe
thunderstorm wind gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes.
The showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy rain. Therefore,
the WPC has issued a Slight Risk (level 2/4) of excessive rainfall
with these thunderstorms over parts of the Southern Plains. The
associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash
flooding, with urban areas, roads, small streams, and low-lying
areas being the most vulnerable.
On Monday, the threat of excessive rainfall decreases over the
Southern Plains, while showers and thunderstorms continue to
develop over parts of the Southeast to the Lower Mississippi
Valley. Meanwhile, a weak front develops over the Northern High
Plains on Sunday evening and moves into the Northern Plains/Middle
Mississippi Valley by late Monday, producing scattered showers and
thunderstorms over the Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley.
Furthermore, the western third of the country will be relatively
quiet.
