Short Range Forecast Discussion
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
411 AM EDT Fri Mar 27 2026

Valid 12Z Fri Mar 27 2026 - 12Z Sun Mar 29 2026

..A cool down in the Plains and the East Coast will occur behind
a cold front passage, while the West continues to feel above
average warmth...

..Fire weather concerns will prevail across the Plains, as well
as parts of the Southeast...

..Much of the nation will be dry and see little in precipitation
for the weekend, with the exception of showers and thunderstorms
in South Florida...

The record breaking heat that was gripping the U.S. heartland is
abating as of this overnight period with a cold front moving
southward across the southern Plains and the Ohio Valley.
Northerly winds behind the front will bring cooler temperatures
Friday for much of the Midwest into the Northeast. Expect
widespread high temperatures in the 40s and 50s with some 30s
across the Great Lakes and New England. The slow nature of the
front will allow temperatures to warm up into the middle and upper
80s across the Deep South and the Carolinas on the day Friday. By
Saturday, the front will clear the Southeast and bring with it the
cooler airmass as high temperatures drop into the 60s across the
South. For weekend morning low temperatures, expect 20s and 30s
for the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic. The Southeast will see
temperatures plummet into the 30s and 40s and bring a potential
frost threat to the early Spring growing season. Meanwhile, the
West will continue to see above average warmth. High temperatures
will reach the low 100s in the desert Southwest and into the 80s
and upper 70s for the remainder of the Inter-Mountain West. By the
end of the weekend, the warmth will begin to return back to the
Plains once more as the ridge moves east.

The post-frontal air mass across the Plains today will be
conducive for fire weather as gusty winds, some as high as 35-50
mph in states like Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, and low
relative humidities will be present. Red Flag Warnings, Wind
Advisories, and High Wind Warnings are in effect throughout the
region. Ahead of the front in the Southeast, favorable fire
conditions will be present, and accordingly local weather forecast
offices have issued Red Flag Watches.

In terms of precipitation, rain showers and some general
thunderstorms will be possible along and behind the cold front
today for the Tennessee Valley and Mid-Atlantic, as well as
falling temperatures as mentioned previously. By Saturday, the
front is expected to move southward into Central Florida before
stalling Sunday. Expect unsettled weather in Florida for the
weekend with breezy north-easterly winds, showers, and a few
thunderstorms. The rest of the nation will be mostly dry as a
strong area of high pressure moves into the center of the country.
