    Question of the day….

    How is it possible that I taught the same amount of material we are teaching today in a 1260 hour program in 945 hours. In addition my students wrote out their notes line by line on paper, and did not have everything handed to them on an iPad. And…. I was able to have them do all the labs, plus we did some really neat additional projects (any of my prior students remember your home-made keg coolers?).

    This question comes up because several of my instructors are complaining they do not have time to cover the material and do all the labs.

    So:

    1) We have government employees going to food banks to feed their families.
    2) Tampa International Airport has opened a food bank for the federal workers that are working without pay.
    3) The Canadian Air Traffic controllers are sending Pizza’s to their US counterparts to attempt to help them out as they are working without pay.
    4) The FDA is sending its inspectors back to work, without pay to safeguard the food supplies.

    Who would have thought.

    I promise you this would be solved fast if the Air Traffic controllers would get all the planes on the ground and close US air space and the TSA would close all checkpoints and not allow people through security.

    Someone would have to make a choice…… does the military build a wall…. or does the military re-open air travel? Not enough military trained to do both at the same time.

    Peanut has this down to a science. She will go out, fake squat, and come back in for her treat. Then she is right back outside again and goes and really does her business and then comes back in for another treat.

    When people say the current administration is doing a good job because unemployment rates are down I wonder if they really have any understanding of how unemployment rates are calculated? Who collects these numbers?

    1) Unemployment rates are calculated based on the number of NEW unemployment claims
    2) Unemployment rates are calculated by the number of people collecting and filing unemployment reports.

    Now, these numbers are suspect because they do not always include the long-term unemployed. What do I mean by that? Well, most states unemployment ends after 26 weeks, some go out to 12 months. Now, let’s say that you have used your 26 weeks unemployment and stop filing because what’s the point? You aren’t going to get anymore benefits.

    Because you stop filing the government no longer counts you among the unemployed.

    In some states the unemployment compensation is so low that if you make ANY money over $20.00 in the week you will not collect anything. Again, people stop filing. Why bother? So, the unemployment reports now no longer count you among the count of “unemployed.”

    So, is our administration actually making a difference on the unemployed, or are they riding the waves of people falling off of the unemployment roles?

    Sometimes it’s good to look behind the numbers and see what makes them.

    So…. once again we think that a prescription drug may have caused my night-before-Christmas hospital stay (actually 4 days before Christmas).
    One of my doctors in trying to do the right thing was treating my constant back pain with a low dose (600mg twice a day) of Gabapentin. It did a number on my stomach, increased acid reflux, may have inflamed a hiental (sp?) hernia and caused a lot of pain in my esophagus because of the acid.
    While I was in the hospital they stopped giving me everything but my blood thinners. After being out of the hospital we restarted my gabapentin. Stomach issues returned. Then we stopped it again. Stomach issues gone.

    So… our new governor, second day on the job, making a statement by flying around the state in a plane seized from a drug dealer.

    Perhaps they should have fixed it first?

    And the pack weirdness continues. I think Rambo may have pulled a muscle on his right rear leg and is being a bit of a crybaby. We will see if the rimadyl helps. Boy may be on crate-rest for rest of weekend. That’s his hurt leg anyways, I would love to know how he hurt it originally.

    Damn, I knew someone wasn’t feeling good.
