A well defined cold front -- responsible for yesterday's severe
weather and heavy rainfall across the Ohio Valley and Northeast,
is anticipated to slowly sink towards the southern Appalachians as
its parent low pressure center pulls further away in Quebec. The
slow moving nature of the front sets the stage for impactful flash
flooding today and tomorrow from the Virginia Tidewater into the
Carolinas as heavy thunderstorms train along the boundary, with
plenty of moisture to tap into. Some severe weather is also
possible in this region today, although the overall coverage and
intensity of severe weather hazards (tornadoes and severe wind)
are expected to be lower compared to yesterday.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to continue
meandering westward across the Central Gulf Coast over the next
two days. Tropical Storm Warnings and Coastal Flood Warnings are
in effect from southernmost Alabama to the southeast Louisiana
coastline. Isolated to scattered flash flooding also remains
possible as the outer bands of Bertha impact these areas.
In the West, an influx of monsoonal moisture on the periphery of a
shifting upper-level ridge will maintain thunderstorms capable of
isolated to scattered flash flooding over the Southwest and Great
Basin through tomorrow. Eventually, mid-level disturbances
rotating around the ridge axis will interact with a stalled front
and shift the focus for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall toward
the Central Rockies and Plains states.
Hazardous heat is expected to continue over the Southern Plains
through Friday as the aforementioned upper-high parks overhead.
Beyond tomorrow, ridge expansion/strengthening will also expand
the hazardous heat over portions of the Southwest, Great Basin,
and eventually the Northern Plains.
