WIA Represented at RadComms 2026 as Australia Talks Spectrum

Australia’s major radiocommunications conference, ACMA RadComms 2026, kicks off in Melbourne this Tuesday,
25 August, bringing together government, regulators, telecommunications and space industry representatives,
researchers and spectrum specialists for two days examining the future of Australia’s radio spectrum.
This year’s theme, “Global challenges, local solutions”, puts the focus firmly on how spectrum can continue
enabling a connected Australia as demand from terrestrial, satellite and emerging technologies grows.
The Wireless Institute of Australia will be represented at RadComms 2026 by Peter Young VK3MV and WIA Director
Justin Giles-Clark VK7TW.
Their attendance provides an important opportunity for the amateur service to maintain relationships and
engage with the wider radiocommunications community.
Amateur radio occupies spectrum alongside an increasingly diverse collection of commercial, government,
scientific, satellite and emerging services, so being part of the broader spectrum conversation matters.
Day One looks firmly toward emerging technology.
Following the opening address from ACMA Acting Chair Adam Suckling, sessions will examine 6G, artificial
intelligence and spectrum management, Australia’s 6 GHz strategy, direct-to-device satellite services,
the future of the 2 GHz spectrum, the impact of LEO satellite systems, links between spectrum and
Australia’s space industry, AI-driven network design and spectrum licensing and pricing.
The Australian Space Agency’s Enrico Palermo will also discuss the Australian space industry’s
spectrum linkages.
Day Two turns toward the international spectrum environment, including developments through the ITU and
World Radiocommunication Conference process, international spectrum policy, the continuing LEO satellite
revolution and Australia’s next generation of mobile connectivity.
The conference will finish by looking toward two enormous communications challenges on Australia’s horizon:
the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Australia’s FIFA World Cup experience.
For amateur radio, many of these subjects are anything but remote.
Satellite constellations, spectrum sharing, interference management, international ITU decisions,
new mobile technologies and increasing pressure on finite spectrum resources all have potential
implications for the amateur and amateur-satellite services.
RadComms provides an opportunity to hear where regulators and industry believe radiocommunications is
heading and, importantly, to ensure amateur radio remains visible within that environment.
