Could Your Club Help a School Talk to the International Space Station?

Imagine the excitement of students asking questions directly to an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
It's an unforgettable STEM experience, and your amateur radio club could help make it happen.
The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program invites schools, Scout and Guide groups,
and other educational organisations to apply to host a scheduled contact with an astronaut aboard the ISS.
Successful applicants spend several months integrating space, science, technology, engineering and amateur radio
into their educational program before the big day, when students have around ten minutes to ask questions as the
ISS passes overhead.
Australian amateur radio clubs have an important role to play by partnering with local schools and community
organisations, providing technical expertise, mentoring and on-the-day operational support.
Whether through a direct radio contact or an ARISS telebridge, these events inspire the next generation of
scientists, engineers and radio amateurs.
Many WIA members have already seen the excitement first-hand.
At the last two WIA Annual General Meeting and Technical Expo gatherings, students from Girton Grammar School
in Bendigo and The Scots School Albury successfully spoke with astronauts aboard the International Space Station,
creating unforgettable experiences for students, teachers and delegates alike.
If your affiliated club has links with a local school, Scout or Guide group, university, museum or community
education organisation, why not explore hosting an ARISS contact?
It is one of the most rewarding ways amateur radio can showcase its educational value and inspire future generations.
