AIR QUALITY IMPACTS: As of August 19, a temporary lull in heavy
wildfire smoke from Canada is observed across the US, though
persistent Canadian wildfire activity suggests this may be short-
lived. Air quality alerts had affected the Midwest and Northeast
in previous weeks.
PAST ADVISORIES: In mid-July, smoke from Ontario wildfires severely
degraded air quality across over 20 US states, from Minnesota to
New York. Cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis
experienced unhealthy to hazardous conditions. Officials advised
residents, especially vulnerable populations, to limit outdoor
activity.
EXPOSURE LEVELS: From July 15-17, approximately 106 million person-
days of exposure to unhealthy or hazardous air occurred in Canada
and the US due to these fires. On July 16 alone, over 19 million
people were exposed to hazardous air.
