The agenda for the EastNet Quarterly Call will be:
Updates from the TPRFN - Glenn N3MEL will let the group know how things are
working and any new features that have been implemented.
Radio Relay International - We will get an update from Jim and Charles on how
the digital modes and methods have been functioning.
Then there will be a detailed discussion on BBS Bulletins. Too often BBS
operators have just been forwarding any and all bulletin traffic to every
partner on their system. This can create some issues on the network:
- Most do not consider how many bulletins they are flooding the system with and
rarely do they consider that some partners in the network may be connecting
to other partners that have limited bandwidth.
- Not everyone is connected via a wired internet connection
- Many are now starting to inject bulletins that are redundant information
that is being injected by multiple other sources
- Having forwarding to multiple forwarding partners just to say that you are
connected to a bunch of other BBS's is not necessarily the best for the
network
- Since we are building an internet independent network, should there be
outages, most BBS operators have no idea how to minimize their bulletin
traffic forwarding to reduce the strains on networks that may be suffering
limited capacity.
- Not every part of the network can be considered "I've an internet connection
so I will just give my partners everything I have and let them decide what
to do with it". That is now part of the problem. Many if not most BBS sysops
have no idea how to limit them.
- RF Digital networks built, funded and maintain by volunteers have finite
resources, both on the hardware side AND the RF capacity and resources.
Join us for the call, this topic is long overdue to be actively discussed.
It will be lively for sure :-)
Come and share your experiences so we can all learn.
