Call for Hub Stations: Help Continue to Build a True RF-Only Digital
Network
The Packet Radio Forwarding Network (TPRFN) is actively recruiting amateur
radio HF operators to establish and operate dedicated Hub Stations across
the United States.
TPRFN bridges local VHF/UHF packet systems and standalone nodes into a
unified, nationwide store-and-forward messaging network using HF digital
modes (primarily VARA HF & BPQ). The objective is simple: maintain a
resilient, independent digital backbone that operates 100% off-grid and
RF-only, eliminating single points of failure like AXIP and commercial
internet infrastructure.
Why Nationwide Hub Expansion Is Vital
Bridging Regional Propagation Gaps: TPRFN relies heavily on Near Vertical
Incidence Skywave (NVIS) on 80m and 40m for dependable regional linking.
Because NVIS operates effectively within 200–400 miles, continuous
geographic stepping-stones are required to route traffic seamlessly across
state lines and regions without relying on skip zones.
True Grid-Down Redundancy: When severe weather, cyber disruptions, or
infrastructure failures knock out internet and cell services, localized
packet nodes become isolated islands. A dense, distributed mesh of HF Hubs
ensures messages, ICS-213 forms, and National Traffic System (NTS)
radiograms can always exit a disaster zone.
Alternate Routing & Mesh Resilience: More Hubs mean dynamic alternate
pathways. If a station goes offline or band conditions shift on a specific
frequency, traffic automatically re-routes through neighboring hubs
without dropping throughput. What We Look For in a Hub Station
License & Gear: General Class or higher amateur radio license, an HF
transceiver capable of clean digital duty cycles, and an effective NVIS
antenna (80m/40m dipole, end-fed, or loop).
Software/Modem: BPQ32/LinBPQ node running modern soundcard digital modes
(VARA HF registered required).
Operating Posture: Ability to operate 24/7 (or on scheduled polling
intervals) to forward automated BBS traffic and serve as a regional relay
point for local nodes. Get Involved
Whether you currently manage a local BPQ BBS/node or have the station
capabilities to support your region, your participation expands the reach
of emergency-ready amateur radio.
