  • Fielding Summer National Session 2012

    Just left the Fielding Graduate University’s school of Educational Leadership and Change Summer 2012 session this morning. I can’t even begin to describe what I got out of it. Not only with some answered questions but also with some new questions still to answer.

    We had some wonderful discussions on technology, some one education, and some on both technology and education. I am walking away with some thoughts I need to explore with my management team at Porter and Chester Institute, as well as some additional research that needs to be done.

    Also I spent a lot of time observing how various students and faculty use their technology. iPads seem to have outnumbered the laptops at this session, but it seems not to be split across all schools. Some of the schools seem to still be heavy users of the paper and pencil for note-taking. Hmmmmm….

    The other thing that make me take notice was watching people open up their laptop bag, remove the ipad, then the stand, then the keyboard, and then the stylus. Congratulations, they just built a laptop. Wouldn’t it have been easier just to bring the laptop? Makes me wonder if we are using technology for a purpose or just using technology to be cool. What  are your thoughts?

    I am so picturing those Greyhounds sitting in their kennel about now, with the trainer who left the TV on and all of his kennel mates are laughing at them and calling them names. I think there will probably be some bullying in the turn-out pen in the morning – “nah,nah,nah you were beat by Mr. Quiggly.” Cute ad, but the Greyhounds should have kicked Quiggly butt!

    Just got back from UConn with the Mindy, Peanut, and Ranger. We went on our 2.5 mile walk around the pastures and then I put the muzzles back on and let them off-leash in an empty nicely fenced pasture along the road. Peanut had her jacket on (a little cool for her) and Mindy and Ranger just had their muzzles. They raced each other around the pasture for three laps (fence run), there was a little growling (made me nervous) but once they tired each other out they came right over to me and followed me around as I walked another lap or so for them to cool down. I have three very tired Greyhounds right now.

    Ranger just got done panting and is laying on the floor next to me. Mindy and Peanut are starting their post-excercise nap. At least we had no nasty comments about muzzles on dogs this time and no-one called security on me. It was a great run for them. If weather holds we will do this again next weekend as well.

    Good Morning all! It’s about 41 degrees here in Willington, CT. Just got back in with the pups from a little lure practice in the back yard. It’s not as easy as it sounds….. first, we have to rescue the track lure from it’s hiding spot on top of the refrigerator, then we take each dog individually outside with muzzle (this is to protect the lure so I don’t have to replace it after each time I use it). We spend 15 minutes or so throwing the lure around the yard and the pups race after it. Once I throw the lure, I have to race after the Greyhound to go take the lure away from them when they get it, and sometimes that is a moving target. While I am outside, Jesse has to be inside controlling the two remaining pups. This morning it included taking them inside a room on the other side of the house with the TV volume up so they don’t hurt themselves doing inside zoomies while the other one is outside. So, how did we do this morning?

    Mindy, is a seek and destroy Greyhound. She knows what I am reaching for when I get the lure out of hiding, she is the first to the door. She would probably put her own muzzle on if she could, and then she is waiting, tail wagging in the yard for me to start the game of chase. She is in wonderful shape and doesn’t get winded easily. She had fun and I had to convince her to go back inside (grabbing hold of collar and walking her inside).

    Peanut was next. She ran a few times after the lure, but it is too big for her to grab hold of, it is almost the size of her head. She looses interest after it stops moving and it is too big for her to grab hold of like the other two do. She finally had enough and went back to the door by herself. She had fun, tail was a wagging!

    Ranger, this was his first time out since we had him, he got to the door, almost tried to knock it down on his way out. He waited VERY impatiently at the bottom of the deck steps for me to get out with the lure. First throw he got to where it hit the ground almost at the same time. He is VERY aggressive on the lure, almost like Mindy is. He ran, ran, and ran this morning until I decided he had enough. He is still out of shape and it took him almost 1/2 an hour to recover. We will work on that before the first LGRA meet in the Spring.

    Now they are all asleep (well, pretending to be). They LOVE lure practice days!

    I think we should hold a spur of the moment LGRA/NOTRA event one of these nice warm weekends! The pups want to run!

    Ok some one at Petsmart just pissed me off. As I was leaving the store a Petsmart employee came running into the lobby to ask me if I would call anyone I know in Florida to have them call their stat representative to help stop Greyhound racing. Wrong person to approach. I told her I am a racing owner and have met everyone that has taken care of my adopted dogs and they are all well taken care of and I will call anyone I know in Florida to make sure racing continues. She got pissed and swung around on her heels and huffed away. I am writing a letter to petsmart corporate an d letting them know I will never spend another some in their stores unless I receive a written apology from the store manager. That’s BS.

    I guess the rules about sharing may be changing in this house. Two pups, on one bed, at the same time? I had to grab my phone and take a picture so I can prove it happened. Peanut and Ranger.

    So far behind on so many things this week. I will get Greyhound-data caught up by weekend. Also, will post more updates on our pack. Ranger is doing well, Peanut is being Peanut, and Mindy is still a little pissed at us for bringing Ranger home but she is getting over it (slowly).
    For the next 12 weeks time is tight. I am teaching a night class in Woburn, MA – an hour and a half from home. Have to leave at around 2 and don’t get home until midnight. Thank God it is only Mon-Wed. But then I still have my real job and my 2 part time jobs….. Tired!!!
