Electrical Training
Electrical systems are a fundamental part of modern HVAC/R equipment, photovoltaic systems, energy storage, controls, and technical service work.
This section brings together the electrical training material on cmolnar.com. The courses emphasize practical understanding: how electrical systems operate, how components work together, how to use electrical test equipment, and how technicians can approach inspection and troubleshooting systematically.
Choose a Training Path
The electrical material is organized around practical applications. Begin with electrical fundamentals and HVAC/R control circuits, develop a systematic approach to electrical troubleshooting, or continue into photovoltaic solar and battery energy-storage systems.
Basic Electrical for the HVAC Technician
Build a foundation in electrical theory and apply it directly to heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
The course progresses from basic electricity and circuits through meter use, series and parallel circuits, relays, transformers, thermostats, schematic reading and systematic electrical troubleshooting.
HVAC Electrical Troubleshooting
Learn a systematic approach to finding electrical problems by understanding what the circuit should be doing and using measurements to determine where expected operation changes.
Follow the source, path, switches and load while using the schematic, sequence of operation and electrical measurements to isolate faults instead of guessing which component has failed.
PV Solar Systems
Learn photovoltaic solar systems from a service-technician perspective, beginning with system fundamentals and progressing through inspection, electrical testing, troubleshooting, repair and battery energy-storage systems.
The course emphasizes identifying system architecture, tracing power flow, making meaningful electrical measurements and using a systematic process to isolate faults.
Basic Electrical for the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technician
This course introduces the electrical principles and control components commonly encountered by HVAC/R technicians. It combines electrical theory with practical circuit construction, meter use and troubleshooting so that electrical concepts can be connected directly to field service work.
The course begins with voltage, current, resistance and Ohm’s Law before progressing into actual circuits. Students then learn how to use electrical test equipment and apply those measurements to relays, transformers, thermostats and HVAC/R control circuits.
Electrical Fundamentals
Voltage, current, resistance, AC and DC, Ohm’s Law and the fundamental principles needed to understand electrical circuits.
Understanding Circuits
Build basic, series and parallel circuits and understand the relationship between source, switch, path and load.
Electrical Test Equipment
Learn to measure voltage, resistance and current and use those measurements to determine what a circuit is actually doing.
HVAC/R Controls
Understand relays, transformers, thermostats and the electrical control circuits commonly encountered in HVAC/R equipment.
Schematics
Learn electrical schematic symbols and use diagrams to understand circuit operation before beginning troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting
Apply electrical theory, sequence of operation and meter measurements to locate faults logically instead of guessing which component has failed.
The troubleshooting foundation: Source → Path → Switch → Load. Even complicated control systems can be broken into basic electrical functions that can be understood and tested.
HVAC Electrical Troubleshooting: A Systematic Approach
Electrical troubleshooting does not have to be a process of guessing which component has failed. A technician who understands what a circuit is supposed to do, knows the sequence of operation and uses a meter logically can narrow most electrical problems one step at a time.
The HVAC Electrical Troubleshooting guide develops a repeatable field process. Begin with the complaint, determine the expected sequence, identify the basic parts of the circuit, verify the source and then follow the circuit until actual operation no longer agrees with expected operation.
Understand the Complaint
Turn a general complaint such as “the air conditioner doesn’t work” into a specific electrical or operating problem that can actually be diagnosed.
Know the Sequence
Determine what should happen, in what order it should happen, and which electrical components are responsible for each step.
Identify the Circuit
Break complicated circuits into their fundamental parts: source, path, switches and load.
Verify the Source
Prove that the required line voltage or control voltage is actually available before troubleshooting farther into the circuit.
Follow the Circuit
Use the schematic as the map and the meter to move logically through the circuit rather than jumping randomly between components.
Prove the Failure
Verify that a suspected component has the correct input but fails to produce the expected result before replacing it.
Systematic troubleshooting: Find the last point where the circuit is behaving correctly and the first point where it is not. The fault must be associated with what lies between those two points.
Photovoltaic Solar and Battery Energy Storage
The PV Solar Systems course extends electrical troubleshooting into photovoltaic generation and battery energy-storage systems. It is designed around the work of technicians who need to identify equipment, understand power flow, inspect systems, make electrical measurements and systematically diagnose faults.
The course progresses from basic PV system architecture through visual inspection, AC and DC testing, module-level diagnosis, repair and replacement, and battery energy-storage troubleshooting.
PV Solar System Fundamentals
Understand photovoltaic modules, strings, arrays, inverters, microinverters, power optimizers, system components and electrical power flow.
Visual Inspection and Assessment
Develop a systematic inspection process for modules, mounting systems, conductors, connectors, disconnects, inverters and combiner equipment.
Electrical Testing and Troubleshooting
Move systematically through AC testing, DC string measurements, module and optimizer testing, and complete PV system diagnosis.
Repair, Replacement, and Documentation
Determine what can be repaired, what should be replaced, how replacement equipment is selected, and how completed work is verified and documented.
Battery Energy Storage Systems
Identify battery-system architecture, trace charging and backup power flow, inspect equipment safely, diagnose electrical and communications faults, make service decisions and verify restoration.
Understand the System Before You Troubleshoot It
An HVAC control circuit, a photovoltaic system and a battery energy-storage system can look very different, but good electrical troubleshooting follows the same fundamental process: understand what the system should be doing before attempting to determine why it is not doing it.
Understand the Complaint
Determine exactly what is not operating correctly rather than beginning with an assumed failed component.
Know the Sequence of Operation
Determine what should happen, when it should happen, and what conditions must be present for the next step to occur.
Understand the Circuit or System
Use schematics, equipment documentation and system architecture to determine how electrical power and control should move through the equipment.
Know What You Expect to Measure
Determine the expected voltage, current, resistance or operating state before placing test equipment on the circuit.
Measure Systematically
Start at a known point and follow the electrical path, comparing actual measurements with expected operation.
Find Where Normal Operation Changes
Locate the boundary between the last point operating correctly and the first point where the expected electrical condition is missing or abnormal.
Verify the Diagnosis
Test the suspected component or condition before making a repair or replacement decision.
Determine Why It Failed
Do not stop at the failed component. Determine whether another electrical, mechanical, environmental or system condition caused the failure.
Verify the Repair
Return the system to operation and confirm that the original complaint has actually been corrected.
Electrical Troubleshooting Is a Process
Electrical troubleshooting should not be a process of replacing parts until the equipment begins working. Determine what the system should be doing, make appropriate measurements, compare expected operation with actual operation, and use the evidence to isolate the fault.
As electrical systems become more complicated, the value of a systematic approach becomes greater—not smaller.
Choose the Course That Matches Your Work
New to Electrical Work?

Know the Circuit and the Expected Voltage Before Testing
Electrical troubleshooting can require measurements on energized equipment. Technicians should understand the equipment being tested, identify all potential energy sources, use appropriately rated instruments and personal protective equipment, and follow applicable manufacturer and workplace safety procedures.
PV and battery systems require particular attention because multiple electrical sources can exist simultaneously. Utility power, photovoltaic generation, stored battery energy and inverter-generated power may energize different portions of a system.
