Technology

Linux, servers, programming, amateur radio,
automation and the projects that connect them.

Technology has been part of my work and interests for decades.
This section brings together software, Linux administration,
servers, databases, amateur radio and the technical projects
that grow out of trying to make different systems work together.

Explore Technology

The projects on this site tend to overlap several areas,
but most fit somewhere within these four categories.

Linux & Servers

Linux administration, web and mail servers,
networking, automation, system configuration
and the infrastructure running behind the scenes.

Future articles and projects in this section will
collect server administration, Linux configuration
and related system work in one place.

Programming & Databases

PHP, Python, Java, SQL, MySQL and other software
developed to automate tasks, process data and solve
practical problems.

Much of the code documented here exists because
there wasn’t an off-the-shelf solution that did
exactly what I needed.

Amateur Radio

KO4YAW, radio equipment, Linux radio software,
APRS, digital communication and projects that
combine radio with computers and networking.

Automation & Integration

Connecting APIs, scripts, databases, radios,
weather stations and servers so information can
move automatically from one system to another.

Featured Technology Projects

A few of the more complete technical resources
currently available on the site.

Yaesu FT-710 on Linux

Configuration examples for using the Yaesu FT-710
with Linux, including USB device configuration,
ALSA audio, rigctld and Direwolf.

This project documents the configuration required
to make several pieces of radio software and hardware
work together consistently.

FT-710 Configuration

Tempest Weather to APRS

A PHP-based project that retrieves weather data
from a Tempest Weather station and converts the
information into an APRS-compatible weather string.

The project combines APIs, PHP, scheduled processing
and amateur-radio infrastructure.

KO4YAW Radio Bulletins

Amateur-radio bulletin and information systems
developed around KO4YAW and related radio activity.

This material is another example of the overlap
between software, servers and amateur radio.

Linux, Servers & Software

New technology articles will increasingly document
the Linux servers, databases, scripting and software
projects used to run and automate the systems
behind this site and other projects.

As those articles are published, this page will
become their permanent index.

A Long History With Technology

My involvement with computers predates most of the
technologies represented on this site. Over the years
I’ve worked with software development, databases,
software quality assurance, Linux systems and technical
training.

That included work with C, SQL and Visual Basic,
followed by software development and packaging for
Mandrakesoft, where Linux training became a substantial
part of my work.

Technology remains less a single subject than a collection
of tools. Whether the project involves a web server,
a database, a radio, a weather station or a WordPress site,
the interesting part is usually figuring out how to make
the pieces work together.
